An ex-con and her lover, a gangster’s moll, hatch a plan to steal a suitcase full of money belonging to the Mob. When this film was released in the late 1990s, it was celebrated (and still is) by women who love women for not buying into the stereotype of female same sex lovers as cropped haired, sensible-shoe-wearing man wannabes. This movie actually presents the lovers as sexy, attractive goddesses, who not only love women, but love being women too. The chemistry between Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon (who’d already had a taste of girl love a year earlier in the fabulously awful Showgirls) is thrilling and titillating to watch and the gangster thriller storyline’s not bad either. It’s great entertainment, although I have to say that Jennifer Tilly’s squeaky voice does grate on me after a while.
